PMI is an indicator of the economic health of the manufacturing sector, based on five major indicators: new orders, inventory levels, production, supplier deliveries, and the employment environment.
The rate of decline in the euro-zone manufacturing sector continued to slow in September. The index rose to a 16-month high to 49.3 from 48.2 in August and exceeded a preliminary estimate of a rise to 49.0. A reading of less than 50 indicates a majority of managers saw a decline in activity, while a figure of more than 50 signals expansion. The index has been below the neutral 50 level for 16 consecutive months.
